Katarina Witt began to ice skate when she was five. Her success allowed her to show her skills and get into the Karl-Marx-Stadt Special School for gifted kids. This was where she met her coach Jutta Muller. Witt made her mark by finishing second in the 1982 World Championships, held in Copenhagen. Then, she was dominating the sport thanks to her elegance and grace. Olympic Success At Sarajevo, at the Sarajevo Winter Games in 1984, Katarina won the gold medal in figure skating for women following a heatedly-contested competition. The winner of the competition was a more competitive race the following year. Although she lost in the free-skating contest, gold medal was awarded to her performances on the mandatory figures and the program in short form. Witt is the only repeat winner in women's figure skating in the sport since Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame After enjoying the success of an actress, Witt returned to the figure skating sport to take part in the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Games. Although she did not win a gold medal, Witt impressed the crowd. Witt was admitted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in the year 1995.
